Lhuillier wants to host 1st Asian softball event

Two-time Pangaea Cup champion and Asian Slo-pitch king Cebuana Lhuillier will hit town on July 15-17.

Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (Asaphil) Slo-pitch Softball commissioner Jean Henri Lhuillier will bring with him the entire Cebuana Lhuillier squad that won the Bangkok International Slo-Pitch League last year.

Sister team Le Soleil de Boracay will also be in Cebu for a clinic at the Cebu City Sports Center field on July 15 and a one-day demonstration tournament at the Cebu Boardwalk on July 16.

This activity is part of Lhuillier’s vision to promote slo-pitch nationally and develop softball and baseball athletes.

First in Asia

“I am looking at holding the first Asian Championship here in 2006 with at least eight foreign teams competing, and from there look forward to qualifying for the World Championship next year,” said the youthful Lhuillier.

Lhuillier’s lieutenant in Cebu, Rayner Sangil of the Cebu Flag Football League, is looking forward to opening a slo-pitch tournament sometime in August.

The expertise and international exposure of the Cebuana Lhuillier team and the vigor of the Cebuanos for softball is expected to bring the sport to an instant height.

The clinic will teach the basics of the game, the rules and technicalities, which differ from the regular fast pitched softball.

Members

Making up the Cebuana Lhuillier team are mainstays of the RP Blu Boys, including at least three Cebuanos, who rose into the national level despite the lack of tournaments and exposure in Cebu.

The roster includes Lhuillier, playing head coach Davy Lan Perez, playing assistant coaches Kiko Diaz, Bubut Dizer and Randy Dizer, Oscar Bradshaw, Apol Rosales, Manuel Binarao, Romy Bumagat, Ben Maravilles, and Jasper Cabrera.

Completing the squad are Fidel Moncera, Anthony Santos, Lando Binarao, Mark Rae Ramirez, Julius Visaya, Alex Estipular, Rayner Sangil, Ron Sangil, Jeff Hardillo, Denis Nuevo, Pato Moral and Sherwin Tabar.
