ML Jewelers outplay Lima Selection in Sogod town basketball friendly
The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Jewelers overcame a lackluster start with a fierce second-half assault to thwart the stubborn Lima Selection, 87-81, in a friendly match Monday at the Sogod Sports Complex in Sogod, Cebu.
The Jewelers, under coach Eddie Ybañez, was stunned at the start as they saw themselves trailing by 14 points, 13-27, after a first quarter.
The Jewelers, though, quickly regrouped and made the necessary adjustments on both ends to outscore Lima, 22-15, in the second canto and cut the lead down to seven, 35-42, at the half.
With the comebacking Jercules Tangkay and James Laygo hitting their targets from the perimeter, the Jewelers continued to pounce on Lima with a 24-14 third-quarter, taking a 59-56 head start entering the final period.
The two squads engaged in a feisty battle from thereon but M. Lhuillier utilized its maturity to outplay Lima in the closure.
All of the 13 Jewelers scored, led by Tangkay and Laygo with 17 points apiece, while Woodrow Enriquez and Leo Bat-og chipped in 10 markers each.
Lima’s Abe Galinato had 18 points, while Joseph Ronald Quiñahan and ex-M. Lhuillier Jeweler Daryl Smith added 14 and 12 markers, respectively, in a losing cause.
