City needs P6.5M to repair posts in Carbon market

Cebu City Hall needs P6.5 million, not P17 million to repair the dilapidated posts of the Unit 1 building of the Carbon Public Market, according to a proposed resolution.

Councilor Gabriel Leyson will submit on Wednesday his proposed resolution approving the programs of works and estimates of the project (POWE).

According to the POWE, about P1.2 million will be spent for general requirements, P4 million will be spent for the civil and structural works and another P1.2 million will be for the scaffoldings and protection work. The budget will be charged against the City’s calamity funds.

Approved

Acting Mayor Michael Rama already approved the POWE.

The Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) has recommended that 17 damaged posts of the building be rehabilitated.

Vertical and horizontal reinforcements of the posts found in the fish section are cracked and exposed due to corrosion. The corrosion and overexposure of these reinforcements were blamed on saltwater as the market is near the coast.

Closed

The City Council passed a resolution declaring the site a calamity area and that the building be closed.

The engineering department also recommended that the affected vendors vacate the building. However, it was later agreed that the vendors may remain inside while the repair is done in phases. Also be installed are scaffoldings and the necessary warning signs to customers and market goers.

Vendors have already issued a waiver not to hold the City Government and the contractor responsible for any accident while construction is ongoing. (GAC)
