Speak out: Going around in circles
By Marjorie S. Ceniza
BSBA 4, CIE

Every Filipino must take some time out and answer the question: How much of a loser are we?

Two decades after overthrowing a dictator, we impeached a plundering president. Then there was the Oakwood mutiny, and allegations of cheating in the 2004 elections. Now, there’s the effort to unseat the incumbent president.

Aren’t we tired? Do we not learn? We are going around in circles. How much of a loser are we?

There’s the wiretapped “Hello, Garci” conversation. And those responsible for its public release are thanking the heavens its contents are being discussed even if it was acquired illegally.

We know our laws, and their foundation, the Constitution. Break the Constitution and the whole structure collapses, or your rights and freedom dies.

Demand the resignation of President Arroyo in the absence of a proper trial and you demand the violation of human rights. Everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty, and the burden of proof lies in the accusers.

The matter of the President’s hold on her office must, therefore, be brought to court. And it must be demanded that evidence presented should be credible, should come from a credible source and acquired through legal means.

If we are only asked to give the President due process and to abide by the Constitution, why can’t we give it?
