Best performance by Cebu bet in age-group event By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Correspondent
Lois Kaye Go finished an impressive third in the 6-7 years old division of the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships at the 54 Colina Park Golf Course in San Diego, California.
Go, a jungolf student at the Cebu Country Club (CCC), had rounds of 64, 62 and 64 to finish 17 strokes behind of top finisher Clair Hodges of the USA.
The Junior World Championships is among the top 10 junior tournaments in America as ranked by Golf Digest and previous winners include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, David Toms, Chris Riley, Notah Begay, Lorena Ochoa, John Cook and Billy Mayfair.
Filipino LPGA mainstays Dorothy Delasin and Jennifer Rosales were also former champions of this event.
Two weeks ago, Go also finished second to Hodges in the Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championship in Illinois.
“This is CCC’s best-ever performance in Junior World. Three of our juniors qualified and all of them made their mark,” CCC jungolf director Jovy Neri said.
Aside from Lois, her brother LJ Go had rounds of 72-67-77 in the par 62 Welk Resort San Diego Fountains Executive Course to finish 34th out of 101 participants in the Boys 9-10 years old.
He was the third-best Filipino in the division and broke the CCC drought by making the cut.
Previous CCC jungolfers who joined the event but failed to make the cut were Andre Borromeo, Paolo Borromeo, Noriko Takahashi, Marko Sarmiento, Jojo Tiongko, Keenan Ugarte and Bayani Garcia. All of them failed to make the cut.
The Girls’ 6-7 division where LK Go finished third did not have a cut.
Highest score
The reigning CCC Junior Club champion Kathleen Uy failed to sustain her strong opening round to stand at 26th spot in the Girls 15-17 division.
Uy, who opened with a round of 77, faltered in the next rounds with 83 and 80 to miss the cut. Uy, though, had the highest scores among Filipinas in the division.
“We had our best ever finish, our first-ever cut made and the first time a CCC junior topscored for the Philippines in the highly competitive 15-17 age group,” said Neri. “This shows that our junior program is moving in the right direction.”
