Serna: Gary and Lea in Cebu

Speaking of shows, here’s something worth looking forward to. While Cebu concert goers are bracing themselves for the postponed major show of Star In A Million Season 1 contender Christian Bautista towards the middle of next month, two equally big (or even bigger) shows have been reportedly booked at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel’s Pacific Ballroom before the year ends.

This info was relayed to me by travel agency exec Steve Alfafara (who also had his stint in the entertainment arena as a TV dance show host some years back).

These are indeed big budgeted shows considering the shows’ main performers.

First is dubbed Soul Full starring Mr. Pure Energy himself, Gary Valenciano.

Gary wowed concert goers early this year in a show which presented some awesome innovations- one of which featured his nephews, nieces and mother who was then in the country for a short visit.

Gary’s Soul Full concert is slated on Sept. 16. That’s not quite distant, mind you.

The second show features the performer most, if not all, local performers and spectators look up to as a source of inspiration and pride. I’m referring to international celebrity Lea Salonga.

Yes! Finally, after more than a decade of waiting after Lea attained international status, Cebu will personally see her display the qualities that made her a musical sensation in the United Kingdom, the United States and other parts of the world starting with the phenomenal stage musical Miss Saigon.

Though Lea has been inspiring awe in Manila concert goers many times after she was catapulted to international fame, it will be the first time for her to perform live before an eager and enthusiastic Cebu audience.

Her show is slated towards yearend yet (Dec. 9 to be exact) but with the so-called ‘-ber months’ that seem to just come and go fleetingly, the next thing you’ll know is that it’s already the concert date itself.

So, if you’re saving for that big day, start doing it now.

Homegrown talents will take centerstage next week (July 30 to be specific) at the launch of Gawad Kalinga which will be marked by a concert led by Born Diva winner Raki Vega. The show’s venue is the Sugbu Grounds located at the South Reclamation Properties.

Also in the list of performers are Chad Borja, youth-leader-turned-recording-artist Raffy Quijano, The Company, The Ambassadors, Still, and Cattski, among others.

It’s not a so-so line-up, eht? So be there.

Last Sunday, although I was on an unplanned trip to the countryside, I was able to catch a glimpse of ASAP ’05’s live telecast straight from Los Angeles, California, US of A.

The segment, which showed Star In A Million Season 1 grand champ Erik Santos and runner-up Sheryn Regis doing their winning songs together exuded a different feeling, that of emotional healing. Well, sort of.

It showed that the two, after the controversies that surrounded them right after the declaration of winner and onwards, have moved on and left the past behind. Sounds like a line of a song? Whatever.

Anyway, in that same segment, Sheryn announced that her second album has just been released. That portion was suddenly cut off from the air for unknown reasons, most probably technical. Sheryn’s second album is entitled What I Do Best – Sheryn Regis. The carrier single also has the same title. The other cuts are Sa Piling Mo, I Don’t Want You To Go, Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka, Sabihin Mo Sa Akin (this is the theme song of the TV fantaserye Kampanerang Kuba starring Anne Curtis), When You Tell Me That You Love Me, Dahil Nagmamahal, If I Ever See You Again, Try It On My Own, and Now That I Have You.

If you have noticed, Sheryn went with the trend these days, that is, singing revivals. Another thing, the songs are the type that don’t require belting or birit, as they call it. In other words, it’s a different Sheryn that we’re going to hear in this album.

We’ll see if Sheryn really does her best doing easy listening songs or if she sounds better with those vocally-challenging ones. However, if the petite songbird really feels that she does best doing the songs in her second album, let’s give it to her.

The album is under Star Records and is now in the market. Sheryn’s no. 1 fan, Cathy Rodriguez, sent a text message that this columnist and colleague A.C. Martin a.k.a. Troy Ciar are acknowledged by Sheryn for helping her in her singing career. Wow. Na-touch ko! Salamat!

If plans don’t miscarry, the Mutya sa Kapitolyo beauty contest last held more than a decade ago will be revived. Female Capitol employees, regardless of civil status, will be vying for the title. This will be held during the duration of the 436th Founding Anniversary of the Province of Cebu on Aug. 1 to 6.

Another activity which is also on the drawing board is the parade of festival queens representing 19 local government units that have already established their respective festivals.

This will be one of the highlights of The Governor’s Night slated on the anniversary day itself, Aug. 6. Just keep posted for developments.
