Wong retains top spot

After a blistering start, Jyrah Wong slowed down in the second day but still managed to retain the lead in the Ladies division of the 1st Samsung Visayas-Mindanao Interscholastic Golf Championship at the Cebu Country Club yesterday.

Wong, who shot a first-day best 50, scored 42 points yesterday for a two-day total of 93 going into the final round today.

The 16-year-old Center for International Education student holds a five-point lead over younger sister, Hannah Jayne, who had a round of 40 for an 88. At No.3 is Naomi Tatar of Sacred Heart School for Girls, who faltered with a round of 14 to stay way behind with 27 points.

In the Boys High School category, Bethany Christian School’s Edsel Tan maintained his lead after a round of 48 to go 98, six points ahead of closest pursuer Chepe Dulay of La Salle Integrated School Bacolod. Alonzo Reyes, also from LSISB, is third with 90 points after scoring 48 yesterday.

Boys competition

In the Boys Team contest, Sacred Heart School-Jesuit stayed on top with a 243-point output after scoring 119 yesterday. Charles Uy led the team with 41, while Franz Ian Dy and Shotaro Suda scored 40 and 38 points, respectively.

Paref-Springdale is a distant second with 175 points behind Francis Jereza’s 42, Paolo Pascual’s 26 and Ariel Tan’s 25.

University of San Carlos’ Mark Dy took the top spot in the Boys Collegiate division after scoring 51 points yesterday, while erstwhile co-leader Blake Go dropped to third after fumbling with a 40 yesterday.

Dy now has 97 points, two ahead of his teammate Efren Gica, who shot 50 yesterday after opening with a 46, while Go is stuck at 86.

In the Boys Grade School competition, Rapahel Wong seized the lead after Day 1 leader Vijay Vasandani III got disqualified yesterday.

CIE’s Wong shot a 41 to up his total to 80, trailed by Springdale’s Lorenzo Almario, who moved to No.2 with 74 points after scoring 35.

Mikhael Manglapus, Almario’s teammate, also shot 35 yesterday to take the third spot with a 72.
