Construction industry encouraged to use technology to hike efficiency
The construction industry and the academe should embrace technology so they can be competitive and efficient.
That’s what Edwin Salazar, president of the Cebu Geomatics Society, said in a press briefing at Casino Español Friday to introduce new technology for land surveys.
“We, in the construction industry, have never been exposed to what was going on in terms of the development of technology that could be applied to our industry. I think it’s about time for us to be updated,” he said.
Salazar said close to 95 percent of students want to work abroad when they graduate. However, the training they get in their schools is based on old technology, he said.
To change this, the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers Cebu Chapter and the Cebu Geomatics Society will train contractors and the academe on the use of technology in their jobs.
Lim Boon Kiet, positioning division regional sales executive of Topcon South Asia PTE. Ltd., emphasized the importance of technology.
“It helps us do our job in a shorter time, in a more comfortable and efficient manner,” he said.
Topcon South Asia provides positioning solutions that are flexible in field applications, like city elevation work, forestry surveys, quarry surveys, mining and accident investigation.
Victor Pulido, vice president for sales of Siccion Marketing, the sole distributor of Topcon products in the country, said the Topcon GPT-3000 series of land survey instruments is better than the traditional mechanical survey instruments in giving precise results.
Topcon products are already used by some construction firms and schools in Cebu like Aboitiz Construction Group, Metaphil, PLD Construction, University of San Carlos and University of San Jose-Recoletos.
Salazar said only about 10 percent of the construction companies in Cebu use Topcon products.
Land & Engineering Survey Solutions will distribute the Topcon products in the Visayas. (ALC)
