Construction sector to get boost from Kalinga project

A house construction project for poor Cebuanos by a nongovernment organization is expected to perk up Cebu’s construction industry.

During a dinner for a cause at the Cebu Grand Convention Center last Friday, the Cebu Provincial Government and some Cebu-based companies pledged cash donations to Kalinga-Cebu, the Cebu component of Gawad Kalinga (GK), a nation-building project of the Couples for Christ (CFC) community.

Although the GK project coordinators accept donations in the form of construction materials and services, the Kalinga-Cebu project will still buy construction materials for the more than 500 houses it will initially build in different areas in the province.

The cash donations announced by Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia reached around P5 million.

Established in 2003, GK aims to construct 700,000 houses in 7,000 communities in seven years.

According to Kalinga-Cebu partnership management group head Che-che Gales, the construction materials for the concrete houses, such as cement, galvanized iron, nails and steel bars, will be sourced in Cebu.

Each house will have a lot area of 32 square meters.

Some of the land for the housing sites has been donated.

Kalinga-Cebu continues to ask companies in Cebu to support the project. (JBN)
