City wins nutrition award

A feeding program and a year-round mothers’ class earned for Mandaue City a Green Banner Award for Outstanding City in the Region.

Dr. Rosemarie Ouano-Tirado, Mandaue City nutrition officer, said the leadership and support from city officials have been instrumental in their health and nutrition projects for children, the youth and women.

Tirado attended the presentation of awardees last Monday.

The City Council has approved a P2-million budget for the milk feeding program for children all over the city, as well as the mothers’ class that is open to all women, married or not.

Ceremony

The City goes by the theme “Best of Health and Sound Nutrition for Children Equals Brighter and Hopeful Future.”

Mandaue, the lone awardee from Cebu, was honored with the green banner last Monday at the Casiño Español during the 2005 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony. National Nutritional Council Executive Director Elsa Bayani graced the awarding ceremony.

Other winners

Pamplona in Oriental Negros won the Outstanding Municipality in the Region for initiating herbal medicine making as an innovative strategy to reduce dependence on pharmaceuticals and reduce burden on indigent sectors.

Oriental Negros was also given the Outstanding Province in the Region award for its “Gulayan at Palaisdaan Alay sa Kabataan” project, which significantly contributed to the reduction of malnutrition rate in the province.

The award was given to Negros Oriental in recognition of its efficiency in implementing the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition.

Barangay Nutrition Scholars were also given due recognition, with Julieta Estose from Barangay Tambooc, Inabanga, Bohol, bagging the top award.

According to Bayani, there is a need to focus on nutrition programs since the rate of obesity has gone up.

A 1998-2003 survey shows that the rate of obesity in children has tripled from 0.4 percent to 1.4 percent.

The rate of underweight children, though, has decreased from 34 percent in 1990 to 28 percent in 2003. (JGA)
