Defending champ ‘97A victorious, overcomes key player’s absence

Despite the absence of Shean Barte, defending champion Gillamac’s ‘97A overcame Cebu del Norte ‘95, 59-42, in a roller-coaster match in the Sacred Heart Alumni Basketball Association (Shaba) Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Worldwide Steel ‘99 continued its hot streak as it scored a 73-54 rout over K1 Family KTV 2001 for its fifth straight win. Jeremy Huang and Robert Gilo were unstoppable in the frontline as they scored 17 points each to hand K1, which was led by John Paul Cabrera’s 21 points, its third loss in five outings.

In the final game, Man Tech ‘97B finally broke out of the losers bracket with a 52-41 win over Hytsu 2005. Jun Comeros led Man Tech with 15 points to snap a four-game losing streak, while Anotinoi Carlos Datan topscored with 14 points for Htysu, which dropped to 1-4.

The win improved Gillamac’s to 4-1, while del Norte dropped to 2-3.

Gillamac’s, which played without one of its vital cogs, Barte, set the pace early behind Ellery Ariate to race to a 12-0 run en route to a 16-9 lead after one quarter. But del Norte’s James Edquilla and Rhett Tomakin came back in the second period to seize the lead, 30-24, at halftime.

The vaunted Gillamac’s defense came alive in the third quarter, limiting del Norte to two points to for an easy cruise to victory.

Ariate finished with 20 points, while Walter Ong added 16. Ian Ong led the losing squad with 14, while Edqujilla and Tomakin chipped in 13 and 12, respectively.
