GM Joey wants Paragua
Their highly-publicized rift notwithstanding, Grandmaster Joey Antonio said he wants International Master Mark Paragua on the Philippine Team that will compete in the 2005 Philippine Southeast Asian Games (Seag).
Antonio told ABS-CBN interactive on Sunday that the 21-year-old Paragua, the reigning Seag rapid chess champion, will be a good addition to the RP team’s rapid squad, and even said that he will request National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) chief Go Teng Kok to grant Paragua’s request to be included in the roster.
Antonio’s statement came as a surprise, especially after both masters engaged in a well-documented word war about a year ago.
Antonio was one of several veteran masters who publicly bared their disgust when a private company planned to set up a P1 million winner-take-all match between Paragua and legendary GM Eugene Torre.
Antonio, who topped both the Men’s Standard and Rapid tournaments of the National Open Chess Championships, said Torre was willing to yield his spot in the five-man rapid squad to Paragua.
“Mark’s entry to the rapid squad is almost certain,” Antonio was quoted by the report, “because we want it that way.” (GCM)
