Richard Natividad agreed to a draw with Ramsy Pedrosa Jr. and then posted the biggest tiebreak score to top the 2005 Rose Pharmacy Active Chess Tournament at SM City-Cebu yesterday.
Natividad, the tournament top seed, employed the Philidor’s defense in his final-round draw to tally six points in the seven-round contest and pocket the P2,000 top prize.
The Retanal brothers, William Jr. and Elwin, also posted six points each but settled for the runner-up spots with inferior tiebreak scores.
William took the second spot after his Pirc defense held on to beat Voltaire Sevillano in the final round. The younger Elwin, a national master, defeated Nelman Lagutin in a French defense encounter in the final round.
Sevillano, who could have won the championship outright had he prevailed over William, settled for the fourth spot with 5.5 points.
Rounding out the top 10 were Allan Salientes, Pedrosa, Bonn Tibod, Eden Diano, Rodrigo Alejandre and Erwin Ababat.
Meanwhile, Kimberly Cuizon emerged the most promising player of the weekend tournament after tallying the best score among lady participants.
Special awards
Playing in her first major tournament, Cuizon, a 12-year-old student of the University of San Carlos South Grade School, tallied four points to place 33rd from among over 100 players, besting veteran lady player and RP team candidate Therese Gonzales for the Best Lady Player award.
In the final round Cuizon lost to International Chess Federation (Fide) honorary chairman Florencio Campomanes.
Venancio Loyola tallied the best score among high school players with five points after defeating Joe Atillo in the final round.
The two players also received cash prizes.
