POC to decide on PBFI today
MANILA – The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) is expected to act on the application for regular membership of the newly-created Philippine Basketball Federation Inc. (PBFI) in its regular general assembly meeting today at the Café J in Makati City.
Newly-installed PBFI president Mauricio “Moying” Martelino said he is confident the POC will give the due recognition so they can immediately seek approval from the Federation International Basketball Association (Fiba).
The constitution and bylaws of the POC require at least two-thirds vote from the 38 POC members before granting permanent status.
“I’m very certain the POC will act immediately on our application for regular membership,” said the 70-year-old Martelino, who was Fiba-Asia secretary-general in 1987-1996.
Some sports officials believe the PBFI will be admitted at once into the POC because POC President Jose Cojuangco, POC Chairman Robert Aventajado and POC Secretary-General Steve Hontiveros personally witnessed the election proceedings of the PBFI the other day at the Makati Sports Club.
“Besides, two officials of the POC in the person of Joey Romasanta, the POC bureau chief, and Gen. Edgar Aglipay are two of the four listed incorporators of the PBFI in the Securities and Exchange Commission,” a source, who refused to be named, said.
The application of the PBFI for regular status is very urgent because the country will host the 23rd Southeast Asian Games on Nov. 27 to Dec. 5. The Fiba recently barred the country from international competitions sanctioned by Fiba.
The Fiba remained firm on its recognition of the expelled Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) when it gave special invitation to BAP president Joey Lina as guest of honor in the opening ceremony of the Stankovic International Basketball Cup, which opens today in China. (FCC)
