Telecom firm to sponsor Cesafi By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Correspondent
This year’s Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) promises to be bigger after Smart Communications pledged to bankroll the yearly competition among 11 member schools in Cebu City.
“It is definite. They will sponsor us including the other events,” University of the Visayas’ Sonia Cobarde told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday. “We will meet again today to sign the MOA (memorandum of agreement).”
This development has forced organizers to move the Cesafi basketball competition opening from July 31 to Aug. 7.
“(Smart’s entry) is not really the primary reason,” Cobarde said. “We want to make sure that the opening ceremony will be grand.”
Grand Palabas
The postponement will also allow Smart to put up streamers and other materials to publicize its sponsorship.
Touchmobile backed last year’s Cesafi, adding a new twist to the league after allowing students and fans to vote for their favorite players through text.
“We want to make sure our Palabas is grand and we can showoff the dance presentations of the member schools,” Cobarde said. “We are also looking for an artist who will sing the national anthem.”
Cobarde added that Sen. Manny Villar has been invited as the inducting officer for the new Cesafi board.
“We haven’t heard from sir Eddie (Gullas) yet because they were busy with the Sona (State of the Nation Address),” Cobarde said.
Meanwhile, the coaches and tournament managers will meet on Aug. 6 for a solidarity meeting, the same day the Cesafi holds its dancesport workshop.
Prisaa
“This workshop will also be for the Prisaa (Private Schools Athletic Association) since it also includes dancesport,” University of Cebu athletic director Bernard Ricablanca said. “We will also host the Regional Prisaa in the second semester.”
The opening ceremony for the Cesafi’s other events is on Aug. 21 at the University of San Carlos Gym.
The tournament directors and the schedule for the other events are as follows: Danilo Villadolid for athletics on Sept. 22-23, Chris Mejarito for badminton on Sept 16-18, Bro. Marie Aberasturi for football on Sept. 3, Fritz Tabura for tennis on Sept. 17-18 and 24-25, Romeo dela Victoria for sepak takraw on Sept. 27-28, Marsha Malbas for scrabble on Sept 22-23, Jessica Honoridez for table tennis on Sept 24-25, and Raul Luna for taekwondo on Sept 24.
Thelma Datig, in charge of beach volleyball and volleyball, is yet to announce a play date as with Reynaldo Villagricia and Victor Cuenco of chess and dancesport, respectively.
