Toral: Fighting for your copyright By Janette Toral Digital Filipino
I got an email asking what must be done if a print publication infringes on one’s copyright, such as by publishing photos that one took and posted in his website.
The first step is to inform the copyright violator and seek either proper credit or compensation. If you are unable to reach a compromise with the copyright violator, write the Intellectual Property Office and request that a meeting be arranged between you and the publisher. You can discuss the matter and negotiate on the appropriate compensation there.
Although this does not guarantee quick results, I consider it a reasonable alternative to suing the violating entity or individual immediately.
Blogging Gloriagate. The University of the Philippines–Internet
Society Program is organizing a Blogging Gloriagate forum this Aug. 4, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at the UP College of Law in Diliman, Quezon City. Full details about this event can be found at http://www.iblogph.org.
As of this writing, columnist Manuel L. Quezon III and the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism’s Alecks Pabico are the resource persons for this event. What makes these bloggers exciting is that they give faster and more in-depth coverage and analysis of the issues than the traditional media.
Warm Bodies. I visited Sky’s blog and found out that the online anthology “Warm Bodies” now has its second edition, “Warm Bodies 2: Orange Sunset.” This is a compilation of selected bloggers’ interpretations of the theme “Change.”
In the first edition “Warm Bodies: The Kris Aquino Complex,” bloggers gave their insights on a specific issue and connected these with their lives, much like what the actress is famous for.
The Warm Bodies anthology is in e-book form and can be downloaded at http://bodyelectric.blogspot.com/.
APC appoints gold partner. American Power Conversion (APC), an infrastructure availability solutions company, appointed American Technologies Inc. (ATI) as its first Gold Certified Reliable Provider Partner (CGRPP) in the country.
CGRPP focuses on power protection for medium to large data centers, plant maintenance and facilities. It also provides value-added services, such as electrical site audits, project management and supply other power-related equipment.
The 19-year-old ATI is known for being one of the biggest companies in information technology (IT) products distribution. As CGRPP, ATI committed to investing in demo lab equipment and pre-sales support employee training, and passing the certification exam.
The company has a separate business unit for APC with almost 40 employees. ATI president Faustico Co believes that with the increasing global risk awareness, the need to manage and protect data is of utmost importance. He sees great opportunities in this area and believes that taking the CGRPP is the right step in this direction.
Congratulations are also in order to Jason Banico (http://www.banico.org). He recently got chosen in Stanford University’s Digital Vision Scholarship Program.
His project, “Silicon Gulf: The Davao Brain Gain Network,” was chosen from the entries of numerous applicants to this scholarship program.
Silicon Gulf aims to be a microcosmic pilot model of the Silicon Valley phenomenon, where leadership in IT innovation and creativity is evidenced by the startups that flourish in the area.
To meet this objective, the project will build and maintain a dynamic relationship between the private sector, the government and the academe in Davao City. Details about Jason’s project can be found at http://www.silicongulf.net.
