15 boarding houses unsafe: CH team

Students and other lodgers in Cebu City may not be safe even inside their boarding houses, some of which are uninhabitable, as what an inspection team found out.

City Hall’s joint inspection team found said that some boarding houses surrounding the University of San Carlos (USC) main campus are fire hazards and are unsanitary.

Some also do not pay the fees required by the City Government.

Of the 20 boarding houses inspected, 15 of them lack fire extinguishers and fire alarm systems. The fire exits of some houses are also obstructed.

Nine boarding houses also don’t have sanitary permits while 11 others don’t have business permits.

The team’s findings were presented to the City Council during their regular session yesterday.

Councilor Jocelyn Pesquera warned owners of the boarding houses that they may face closure if they continue to violate the Building Code and if they fail to secure the necessary permits.

“These establishments would face closure if the violations continue. Seeing the influx of students every year, the owners are tempted to rent out their rooms without taking into consideration the requirements of the City,” she told Sun.Star Cebu.

The inspection team is composed of inspectors from the mayor’s office, City Health Department, Bureau of Fire Protection, Office of the Building Official, and the City Zoning Board.

Other boarding houses inspected were also found to have poor ventilation and poor housekeeping with unsanitary kitchen, bathrooms and surroundings.

The inspection period ran from June 13 to 29.

Councilors Pesquera and Christopher Alix asked that a more extensive inspection be conducted to cover all boarding houses in the city, since the recent inspection covered only those within the vicinity of USC.

Pesquera specifically asked the team to inspect those located near Cebu Institute of Technology, University of the Visayas, University of Cebu, Cebu Doctors’ University and Southwestern University. (LCR)
