Arafura gold winner joins Enduro San Mig Light race
After bagging a gold medal in the Arafura Games last summer, swimmer Lorhiz Echavez takes on a different challenge as she joins Team Vudu in the Enduro San Mig Light Adventure Race Visayas Leg on Aug. 6.
Echavez, who also bagged three silver medals in the Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia, joins veteran adventure racer and team-captain Niño Abarquez and Rico Valentin in the Elite category of the grueling eight-hour race around Cebu City.
Events
The race will include biking, roller-blading, swimming and kayaking as the racers traverse to the different control points around the city. There will also be surprise games at the CPs.
“We’ll do our best, but as a seasoned racer I know it’s going to be a tough race. Anybody can win,” said Abarquez.
The unique race will also award a team’s sportsmanship as teams may have to stop and risk losing their lead to aid a fellow competitor.
Abarquez’s experience in adventure racing will be a crucial factor for the team. He has joined the Carera Habagat the past two years and topped the Cebu Outdoor Adventure Challenge in 2002 and 2003.
Veteran
Valentin, their team navigator, is also a veteran of the Carrera Habagat and was third in the Enduro San Mig Light Adventure 2003.
Echavez, on the other hand, is probably the youngest female in the race at 19. She was a champion in the Survival of the Fittest challenge in Escalante City on October 2003 and was part of the champion team in the Cebu Outdoor Adventure also in 2003. (ML)
