Chiongbian: What do I have to do to make you love me? By Edgar R. Chiongbian Teetime
Wow about that Tom Watson winning the British Senior Open? It was nice to see Tom win that tournament. But he is no slouch, he used the British Open as practice for the Seniors and he almost made the cut in the process.
The only problem I had with watching the Senior British Open right after the British Open at St. Andrews was that the tournament looked like it was in slow motion. Even the sports commentators seemed laid back. I fell asleep a few times watching it. Don’t you think they should reschedule it so that Senior Open comes first so it will be a step up in pace rather than down?
It almost seemed like I was watching Boy Barcello, Tony Baltazar, Ben Ebrada and Bombi Aznar at the Open. Don’t get me wrong, these guys are experts in the bump and run. There’s no one better. They even do the bump and grind pretty good, too. Probably the only ones who could beat them are Ramon Escario and Boy Opus, but only when they’re hot because they really put power in that putter or long irons and it skips through everything, including the green.
Switching channels and then there’s Ben Crane, the undisputed slow player of the PGA, winning a tournament. He is not always that slow but when he does his thing, it really feels eerie because it brings to mind the time when Sergio was having his own problems with slow play. Since Crane won that tournament, the commentators are now justifying his slow play; that he will only hit his shot when he is ready. Of course, isn’t that obvious. How lame!
WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO MAKE YOU LOVE ME? What do I have to do to make you care? What will I do when it’s all over? Sorry is just the hardest word.
Hey, you guys who have stopped playing golf, it gets very difficult to get back to the game you know. First they complain that it is too hot and now they probably are complaining that it’s too wet. The only time these guys will show up is during a tournament and then they will complain about not winning, including in the raffles.
I know that some golfers are playing in another golf course because the greens and the fairways on one course are so messed up. I don’t blame you guys because you have the opportunity to do so, but for guys like us who can’t, we are at the mercy of the potholes.
This is akin to the streets in Cebu. Even when you know there are potholes on your usual route, will you stop driving a car?
Probably not! Most likely you will drive through the mess and cuss why nobody sees this and does anything about it, right?
Well, let me tell you, no news is old news. Of course the guy who can do something about it also passes through the same road but he doesn’t complain because he knows why it is that way.
GOLF TIP: Four basic things to remember about your set up. First is that your grip should be set diagonally across the fingers of your left hand; resting in your fingers and not in your palms. It is easier to hinge and unhinge your wrist that will add speed to your swing.
Second is your posture. Bend forward from your hips and add some knee flex to keep your weight balanced over the balls of your feet. Your right shoulder should be lined up with your right kneecap and the middle of your right foot.
Third is your aim. Step into your stance with your right foot and then point the clubface at the target. Place your left foot so your body is perpendicular to the clubs’ leading edge. Building your address around the square clubface will eliminate the most common fault of aligning your body to the right.
Fourth is to know how far you are from the ball. The width of your fist is how much space there should be between your body and the butt end of your 5-iron.
The longer the club, the farther you should be from the ball. For the driver, the ideal distance is a fist plus your thumb; and for the wedge, half a fist.
