RP to send 892 jocks, officials to SEA Games

MANILA – The Philippines will send the biggest delegation of 892 athletes and officials to the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Seag), which the country will host on Nov. 27 to Dec. 5.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Jose Cojuangco also said that the total number of participants in the country’s third hosting of the biennial meet has reached 7,665 athletes and officials from 11 nations.

He said the number was based on the entry forms submitted by the 11 nations seeing action in the meet, which was also held in the Philippines in 1981 and 1991.

“We are now the biggest delegation. And we are still expecting more participants from other countries,” Cojuangco said.

He also said that the Philsoc, the organizing committee tasked to prepare for the Games, has set the deadline for submission of foreign entries on Oct. 27, a one month before the start of the Games,

The 41 national sports associations seeing action in the meet have until Sept. 15 to submit their final list of athletes, Cojuangco said.

A total of 41 sports disciplines and 441 golds are at stake in the 10-day sports conclave with 2003 overall champion Vietnam and 2001 titlist Malaysia as strong contenders.

Cojuangco said that based on their initial assessment all NSA heads have expressed confidence the country will win the overall title for the first time since its first participation in 1974.

“I am more confident now than I was before,” he said.

Apart from Metro Manila, hosting some of the games are Cebu City, Bacolod City and Subic. (FCC)
