Philip Morris launches Philippine Art Awards

Philip Morris Philippines Manufacturing Inc. (PMPMI) has officially launched the Philippine Art Awards 2005, the premier and much-awaited visual art competition in the country today.

Now on its 11th year, the Awards is open to all Filipino artists 18 years old and above. An artist may explore any subject or theme and submit a two-dimensional artwork to the competition. Recent works, created in the past two years, are acceptable provided they have not been entered into any competition before.

PMPMI managing director Chris Nelson said the Awards this year promises to be more exciting with the implementation of a new prize structure, making the national competition more challenging for the local artists.

Starting this year, the panel of judges, comprising of five leading art authorities, will select a grand prize winner who will receive P300,000 and four runners-up who will receive P150,000 each. Each of the five winning artists will also receive a trophy and an all-expense trip to Hong Kong.

There will be 30 semi-finalists to vie for the prizes. The exhibition of the 30 works will be formally opened during the awards ceremony at the National Museum on Nov. 17 and will be mounted as a traveling exhibition in three national key cities beginning January until March 2006.

Entry forms to the competition may be picked up from the reception desk of Philip Morris Philippines at the 27th floor, Tower 1, Enterprise Center, Ayala Avenue corner Paseo de Roxas, Makati city and from seven provincial collection centers which have been designated to distribute entry forms and accept entries.

The collection center in Cebu is the Southwestern University Museum. Deadline for submission in Cebu is on Oct. 17. For more details, one may call the SWU Museum at (032) 253-6500.
