GMA 7 wins NBAC Finals Game 1

TWO-TIME champion GMA 7/Kapuso exacted revenge on three-time champion Sun.Star Cebu in Game 1 of the Newsmen Basketball Association of Cebu (NBAC) Gov. Gwen Garcia Cup finals.

GMA, powered by a stellar defensive effort and a big game from forward Godfrey Rellin, posted a 75-67 victory over Sun.Star at the Guadalupe Sports Complex yesterday to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

In the best-of-three series for third, Cebu Daily News likewise won Game 1 after winning by default over ABS-CBN/Kapamilya.

GMA, whose only loss in the 2005 NBAC season came at the hands of Sun.Star in the elimination round, started out hot and erected a 22-11 first-quarter lead.

Two-time MVP Efren Lonzon, who finished with 27 points, lugged Sun.Star to wrest the lead by one, 25-24, in the second period, but GMA immediately reclaimed the leadership behind its transition offense and eventually posted a 38-29 lead going into the third period.

GMA took several 20-point leads in the third period as Rellin, who finished with a game-high 28 points, lit the scoreboard before Sun.Star inched closer behind a spirited fourth-period comeback.

GMA’s 14-point lead with barely three minutes to go, however, proved to be insurmountable as Sun.Star tasted its first loss in three games.

GMA 7 (75) – Rellin 28, Solon 21, Seno 10, Bajenting 6, Veliganio 4, Rallos 4, Suarez 2. Sun.Star (67) – Lonzon 27, Costelo 8, Defensor 8, Aclao 7, Violeta 7, Michelena 6, Lirazan 4. GCM
