Gothong bags 3 golds; UV 2
CARLOS Gothong National High School Taekwondo Club bagged three gold and four silver medals to top the final day of the 2nd Elizabeth Mall Sports Challenge Taekwondo tournament at the E-Mall Activity Center yesterday.
Also finishing strong was the University of the Visayas with two gold medals courtesy of Aly Noel, who defeated Michelle Anterio (Girls 4-foot-9 to 5-foot) and Loydcito Ortega, who defeated Dave Tabornal of USJ-R (Boys 4’9’’-5').
2 sure golds
Going into the final day of competitions, Gothong was already assured of two golds after Sherame Reformado and Ergellen Durano booked a finals seat in the Junior Women’s bantamweight, while Benie Ycong and Lou Kevin Rosales booked the Men’s Junior bantamweight division.
In the final, Reformado got the better of her teammate to snare the first gold as Durano settled for a silver and Sunshine’s Karen Kaye Caño took the bronze.
Ycong defeated Rosales to add a second gold to their cache as Gemar Dejaño took the bronze medal.
Edward Tio added another gold medal in the Men’s Junior flyweight after defeating Ricardo Armasis of Sunshine, while Aljemar Laurente salvaged the bronze medal.
Rovil Mark Balane failed to make it four of four for Gothong as he settled for a silver in the Men’s flyweight after losing to Sunshine’s Alexander Toong. Kenneth Maglasang also stumbled in his quest for the gold and lost to Anthony Valenzona of the University of San Jose-Recoletos to add another silver for Gothong. ML
