It was the ‘grandest’ of all Grand Palabas
By Mike T. Limpag

IF YOU missed the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Grand Palabas at the New Cebu Coliseum yesterday, you probably missed a portion of your life.

The cheering crowd got a glimpse of Madonna, Michael Jackson and even Elvis as the member schools showcased the evolution of dances in one of the grandest openings of any event held at the Coliseum.

“Nindot kaayo (It was very beautiful),” University of Cebu athletic director Bernard Ricablanca said. “Each of the schools has shown the best of each decade.”

First dance

This year’s Cesafi host, University of Cebu, opened with a dance travelogue, while the University of Southern Philippines followed with the Charleston and cancan of the 1930s before the Southwestern University danced the mambo and the chacha of the ‘50s.

“It was the choreographers themselves who decided (what to present during the Palabas),” Ricablanca said. “They met and came up with a show that features dances of different eras.”

Fans of the King had their chance to see a squad of Elvis perform as the University of Cebu showcased the Rock and Roll of the ’50s complete with guitars and his patented sideburns, and Velez College followed with its rendition of the ’60s’ Jerk and Bugaloo, minus the hippies and the long hair.

After the University of San Carlos showcased the disco, the audience had a chance to see what they missed in the ’80s with the well-applauded Cebu Institute of Technology’s New Wave and Rap.

Thriller

They had their Madonna, clad in red lingerie pouting about her possessions, and the raucous Jackson, whose break dancing and crotch grabbing drew shrieks from the crowd.

Just for good measure, they capped it by gyrating to Jackson’s Thriller.

“We will try to duplicate that in the other events opening. But I think maglisod ta (it will be hard),” Ricablanca said.

In the muse contest, UV’s Eula Mercado took the crown with Anaah Mari Egpit and Etherlane Oclarait completing her entourage in the collegiate division. USJ-R’s Sharon Añol topped the high-school contest with Shannon Abarquez second and Christine Espina third.
