Webmasters sweep opening-day matches By Glenn C. Michelena Sun.Star Correspondent
FOR the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, there’s simply no place like home.
Playing in their storied homecourt and armed with the deadly full-court trap, the UC Webmasters fashioned out an 87-73 demolition job of the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildcats yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum in their maiden run in the 2005 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi).
The UC Junior Webmasters, just like their older counterparts, likewise rode on their full-court pressure defense to register a 63-57 win over the CIT Wildkittens in the opening game of Cesafi’s opening-day twinbill.
Center Jan Colina top-scored with 13 points for UC, which also drew 12 points from Mark Gil Panerio. Kenneth Cañete led the Wildkittens with 12 points.
After a rough-and-tumble first half that ended with UC hanging on to a shaky 40-36 halftime lead, the Webmasters’ full-court press did the damage and didn’t allow a CIT field goal in the first six minutes of the third quarter en route to outscoring the Wildcats, 26-8, in the entire third period.
A breakaway slam dunk by Jonathan Canceran allowed UC to take a 66-44 lead going into the final period, where another spectacular play – a vicious tip-in dunk by UC center Miguel Ducay off a missed Orvelle Saludsod floater – opened the period and jumpstarted UC to a fabulous fourth-period assault.
Breakaway
A breakaway bucket by Kane Abatayo put UC up by 20, 71-51, midway in the final period, but CIT managed to chip away the lead after some clutch outside shooting by Jessie Bustos.
CIT got within 11 after a bucket by Enilio Aniñon with under two minutes, but four straight points by UC banger Ata Ayuk with 1:41 left gave the momentum back to UC, which held on to win.
