BAP Visayas VP to intensify hoops program
Following his induction as the new Basketball Association of the Philippines’ (BAP) vice president for the Visayas, Michel J. Lhuillier, wants to strengthen his 23-year-old basketball program.
Lhuillier tasked his lieutenants at the M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation (MLSDF) to promote basketball not only in Cebu but also in the entire Visayas.
“I have been doing basketball for 23 years and I have been sponsoring developmental tournaments ever since. And recently we had this developmental tournament for school players, which I plan to strengthen to reach outside Cebu,” said Lhuillier.
Lhuillier funded the ML Kwarta Padala Cup Inter-School Developmental Basketball Tournament, which was initiated by MLSDF executive director Eddie Ybañez, as an event for age-group players in Cebu.
Visayas wide
“To start with, the ML Kwarta Padala Cup will become a vehicle for the development of basketball in Cebu and I hope to bring it further to Iloilo, Bacolod, Leyte, Bohol, Siquijor and Ormoc so we can develop the grassroots here in the Visayas,” Lhuillier said.
Aside from the tournament, Lhuillier also plans to initiate basketball and coaching clinics with the help of the players and coaching staff of the ML Kwarta Padala Jewelers.
“I have the best coach in Yayoy Alcoseba and he has the best coaching staff as well as the best available players. All this will come into place once we have the master plan,” said Lhuillier.
Meanwhile, Ybañez is now busy preparing for the third season of the Mini and Midget divisions of the inter-school tournament, which is scheduled to start in September.
“I’m now calling on all coaches in the Mini and Midget divisions to prepare their respective teams. This will be a grander competition since we are aiming high this time,” said Ybañez.
The Juniors tournament will open after the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball season, while the intercollegiate will debut in December.
“We are also looking forward to holding a Women’s basketball tournament since this is what Cebu lacks,” Ybañez said. (RCM)
