Toral: Preparing for the holidays
By Janette Toral
Digital Filipino

Today, I finished an e-commerce training workshop for a group that includes personnel of the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Bhutan and the University of the Philippines Institute of Small Scale Industries. I find it heartwarming when interest in e-commerce rises again. Although much of our problems in online payment is still the same, we can’t give up hope, right?

If you noticed, there are a lot of advertisements today announcing Christmas promotions. But don’t be surprised. In the US, statistical reports have been released on how US-based retailers are gearing up for the holiday season.

According to eMarketer.com, retail companies have started promotions that include discounts and free shipping offers, meant to make online shoppers reserve gifts this early.

Free shipping is one of the four most popular considerations among online holiday buyers based in the US. This means that local shopping portals catering to the Filipino diaspora abroad should factor it in heavily this year, along with item prices, product selection, and the website’s ease of use.

One good example of merchants responding to unique promotion is E2Door.com. They have just sent out a newsletter informing buyers that they are offering an exchange rate of only P55 to the dollar. E2Door.com is known to Filipino buyers who buy from websites abroad as it offers much more competitive shipping costs.

CyberFair 2006. We just launched the 5th Philippines School CyberFair Project.

This competition encourages students to “shine the spotlight” on people, places, businesses and other things in their local community—that serve to “inspire, motivate, and encourage positive change.”

The competition was launched earlier this year to give way to the regional competition. I hope more schools will join this year so the regional event will be a success.

E-Learning Conference. For those of you interested in e-learning, note that the 4th National E-Learning Conference is set to take place this Aug. 25 to 26 at the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila. This year’s theme is, “eLearning: Promoting Creative ICT Use.” Visit http://www.e-learning.ph for more information.
