Iligan absorbs first loss at home
Point-guard Marlon Kalaw was hot from the start to finish as he led the Laguna Spring to a 71-64 win over the Iligan Crusaders in the 2005 Panasonic-NBC National Championship at the MSU-IIT Gym Tuesday night.
Over at the San Juan Gym in Metro Manila, the Manila quintet bounced back from four straight defeats to hand the Baguio Lions their worst defeat of the season, 92-56.
After dropping two straight games, Kalaw took charge in handing the Crusaders’ their first defeat at home after six games. Mike Noqui had 17 points, teaming up with Kalaw to form Laguna’s deadly backcourt combination.
3-guard combo
From a slim 37-36 lead at the break, Nuqui fired two of his three triples in the third quarter to lead Laguna’s breakaway as they led by as many as 10 in the period, 57-47.
Laguna coach Vic “Rambo” Sanchez played the final period with three guards on the floor and the ploy worked wonders as Kalaw and Nuqui scattered six points each, while Mar Reyes had two crucial offensive rebounds to wilt away the Crusaders’ rally.
