Serna: Sheryn shining

The parade of festival queens was a refreshing segment of the Governor’s Night in the recently concluded 436th Founding Anniversary of the Province of Cebu. It highlighted the beauty of the maidens from the different towns as well as the cultural richness of these component local government units of the province. Some have suggested to have the parade made into an annual event and to be made into a contest. Good idea.

Despite the intermittent showers and sometimes, heavy rains, that occurred during the aforementioned anniversary celebration, people still flocked to the Capitol for various purposes.

Some went to savor the delicacies that were sold. Some went to buy the products that were offered while others went for the entertainment package that was unveiled, the inclement weather notwithstanding.

Some even danced the night away unmindful that they were already soaking wet with the rain and their sweat combined.
That’s the spirit.

Some fans of the diminutive shining diva Sheryn Regis informed this columnist that they have seen their idol’s music video of the song What I Do Best. Though I was informed that they video would be aired over Studio 23 after lunch last Saturday, the province’s anniversary program prevented yours truly from watching it.

The fans said they were thrilled to see their idol engaging in a kiss with a Cebuano guy whom they later identified as Uma, a contestant in the Pinoy Big Brother search.

Oh, is that what Sheryn meant with the title of the song What I Do Best? He-he! Just kidding. Of course, the kissing came after we learned that it’s in singing that she’s best, right?

Okay, finally the deadline for the submission of entries to next year’s Cebu Popular Music Festival has finally arrived and it’s today, Aug. 12. That is, after the original date was moved two weeks later due to requests from some composers.

Oh, haven’t I told you that the Cebu Pop itself and the extension of the deadline, among other things, have created some noise from various sectors of the Cebuano music loving public?

One of them, allegedly a neophyte composer by the name of Mario Boy Abella of the University of San Carlos, even went to the extent of sending an open letter to this publication.

In that letter, he mentioned the names of Cebu Arts Foundation Inc. (Cafi) executive director Philogene Florita and recording studio owners Gani Villarojo of Soundtraxx Production Studio and Elvis Somosot of Galaxy Records (the record company later reacted to this saying that Somosot is not connected with the record company and that the company is also not part of the screening of entries to the songfest).

Sir Phil has reportedly aired his side on radio (this columnist hasn’t heard it though). I haven’t spoken with Elvis yet as of this writing. However, when I chanced on Gani, the latter refused to dignify the allegations by keeping a ‘no comment’ stance and adding that he has a strong hunch as to the identity of the letter writer.

Some friends, though, doubt that Abella is indeed a neophyte composer judging from his pronouncements in the open letter where he divulged details in last year’s songfest. A few days before this column was submitted, a friend informed me that the letter writer is using an alias which was later confirmed by Cafi saying no such name appears in the Cebu pop logbook of entries.

Oh, well…

Let me thank my good friend, Dr. Henry Yu for the inspiring comments about this column. He said that he’ll keep reading for as long as I keep writing, or words to that effect.

Who would not be touched by that? Uh-uh! Did I hear some people out there shouting in unison the ‘in’ word ‘char’? No, it’s not. Honest. He-he!
