Aliganga endorsed as commissioner
Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday announced that he will endorse former Commission on Elections (Comelec) 7 director Salud Aliganga for Comelec commissioner.
This announcement surprised Aliganga, who was still waiting outside Osmeña’s office yesterday noon for her appointment with the mayor.
“How did you know that? My gosh! Let’s talk about it later,” she told City Hall reporters, who just got out of the mayor’s office, after a news conference.
No problem
Osmeña said, “I told her I will endorse her for commissioner. All I know is I have no problem with Comelec in Cebu City. I have no problem with her.”
He said Cebu City Reps. Antonio Cuenco (south) and Raul del Mar (north) are also endorsing Aliganga, who retired from public service last week.
Asked if Aliganga already sought his help, Osmeña said, “I think she’s going to ask. I’ve gotten feelers already.”
The association of election officers in Cebu Province signed two petitions asking Malacañang to appoint Aliganga as Comelec commissioner and consultant for Central Visayas.
Cebu City Elections Officer Simaco Labata initiated another petition for Aliganga’s appointment.
“I’m so deeply honored because of the trust and confidence reposed on me,” Aliganga said.
Not involved
She downplayed earlier reports that the Comelec helped President Arroyo to cheat her way to the presidency.
“I don’t know if there were any (distribution of money). Basta wa jud ko’y labot. Wa koy apil. My integrity is still intact (I’m in no way involved),” Aliganga said.
Meanwhile, the mayor said he hopes that Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal and the C-Cimpel will finally speak about the results of the presidential elections in 2004.
C-Cimpel, he said, made a thorough count on the election returns. Osmeña implied that Vidal and C-Cimpel’s official statements will have a bearing on the questioned integrity of the 2004 polls and dispel allegations that there was cheating in Cebu City.
“I think people will support the President. The Cebuanos are accused of being cheaters. They can’t accept that she cheated her way to the presidency. The key is they have to look at the election returns for Cebu carefully,” Osmeña said. (GAC)
