Badminton for a cause

Want to have fun, play badminton and help build a home? Then the 1st Customs Collector’s Badminton Cup is for you.

The Aug. 27-28 tournament, which will have five categories each for the Men’s, Ladies and Mixed Doubles divisions, is open to all and will have the Gawad Kalinga Foundation as its beneficiary.

“I believe the Bureau of Customs should be a partner for economic and social development of the country,” Cebu Customs Collector Lourdes Mangaoang said.

Enthusiastic

It was a lighthearted Mangaoang who showed up yesterday with Cebu Chamber of Commerce president Robert Go, Rene Ledesma, Al Lanciste of the Brokers Association, Malou Buning of the forwarders association, Jerome Ortiz of the Cebu Truckers and Danny Lagajes of GK.

“We are enthusiastic over the cause and I hope we can do an event of similar nature and help fellow Cebuanos in the process,” Buning said.

Mangaoang, who joked about her “suing spree in the papers,” said that a few members of the prosecutors office told her they will join the tournament, which is expected to raise some P1.5 million to help build 30 houses worth P50,000 each in Talisay.

Donations

“It will be the BOC personnel and the residents themselves who will build these homes,” Mangaoang said.

The organizers hope to raise as large an amount possible and companies may fax their pledges to the CCCI and hand the payment during the leveling on Aug. 20-21. They will also put up a donation box during the tournament.

“Your help need not be financial – it could be your time, or just tell your friends about this,” Ledesma said.

Meanwhile, the winners of Class A, B, C, D and E will receive still-to-be-determined cash prizes, while raffles and surprises will also be handed out.

“It’s not about the prizes, it’s about helping,” Go said.

Interested players may register with Rhea at 232-3951. (ML)
