Mantawi, Sugbu cagers to play in Thai tourney
Tribu Sugbu and Mantawi Sparkling Knights will have some of their players representing the National Basketball Conference in the 9th Crown Prince Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Jiranakorn Sports Ground’s indoor gym in Haas Yai, Thailand.
NBC president Nathaniel “Tac” Padilla picked the Cebu-based teams following his Laguna Spring’s stint in the Sultan Cup in Brunei and the recent Kwan Hu Cup in Hua Lien, Taiwan.
In a meeting with NBC secretary-general Tito Palma, Tribu Sugbu owners Lito Gillamac and Mario King and Mantawi management’s Jack Huang and Dewey Choachuy Jr. all accepted the invitation.
Coach
Tribesmen coach Al Solis and Knights coach Jun Noel will call the shots for the Nature Spring-backed NBC selection.
“I’m excited and honored to be chosen. It will be a collective effort between three coaches and for sure we will send our best players. The earlier we gel, the better,” said Solis, who piloted Tribu Sugbu to the national title in the NBC’s first season.
The Philippine squad will take on the top ballclubs or national teams from Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea.
Tribu Sugbu and Mantawi are currently locked in a two-way tie for the second spot in the Southern Conference of the 2005 Panasonic-NBC National Championship with 7-4 win-loss cards each.
Line-up
Tribu Sugbu’s line-up boasts of PBA Rookie Draft aspirant Neil Rañeses, shooters Doroteo Almacin and Alex Cainglet, while Mantawi has Ardy Larong and MBA veterans Maui Huelar and Danny Capobres, who will come back to suit up for the team after a tour of duty overseas.
The five-day tournament will follow a single round-robin format with no championship match. The team with the best record wins the title. (RCM)
