Barangay Luz gets award for being ‘most friendly’ in family planning drive

In a bold step to help the Government promote artificial family planning methods, a group of sidewalk vendors launched a contest among barangays on how to best implement the program.

The month-long activity of the Cebu City United Vendors Association (CCUVA) and the Metro Cebu Community Advocacy Network ended yesterday with the awarding of the winners at the Tabo sa Banay.

Barangay Luz bagged the first prize of P5,000 for being the barangay that is “most friendly” in using family planning methods. Barangay Ermita received P3,000 for placing second, while Barangay Carreta received P2,000 for placing third.

Makeshift stage

City Councilors Gerardo Carillo and Edwin Jagmoc handed the prizes in a program held on a makeshift stage.

The contest looked for the barangay with most number of families who use artificial family planning method, with the most number of programs that promote the method, and how much it spends for the campaign.

Officials from City Hall were among the committee members who picked the winners.

CCUVA secretary Celia Quijoy, 40, said Luz was the only barangay in Cebu City that finances the program by itself, spending P100,000 from its gender and development fund.

“Pamilya ay Mahalaga, Agwat ng Panganganak Iplano Mo na (The family is important, so plan the spacing of your children),” was the theme of celebration.

Quijoy said contraceptives and other artificial methods of family planning are becoming more important as the country continues to face an economic crisis. (AIV)
