Congress urged to help Seag

MANILA – Speaker Jose De Venecia yesterday strongly endorsed the letter of solicitation calling all representatives to provide financial support for the staging of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Seag) on Nov. 27 to Dec. 5.

In a letter to his colleagues, Rep. Renato Unico, chairman of the committee on sports development, called on all members of the House of Representatives to donate a portion of their pork barrel to ensure a successful hosting of the 11-nation meet, the Olympics of the Southeast Asian region.

Crucial

“It is in this light that the active support of the members of the House of Representatives is crucial to ensure the success of the Games and help reinvigorate the flagging spirit of our countrymen, many of whom desperately need a challenge such as this to re-channel their energies and give them much needed hope,” Unico said in his letter to all the 281 members of Congress.

Each member of Congress is allotted at least P70 million for their countryside development fund this year.

Insufficient

The move came after Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee officials, led by vice chairman Jose Cojuangco and Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez, admitted in Congress last week that the committee tasked to undertake the preparations is still short of the targeted P1 billion to finance the Games.

The Philippine Olympic Committee headed by Cojuangco estimated 5,340 athletes seeing action in the 41 events that offers a total 441 golds.

Aside from Metro Manila, also hosting the SEA Games are the cities of Cebu, Bacolod, Angeles, Tagaytay and Subic.

Unico of Camarines Sur reminded the members of Congress that it will be a big national embarrassment if the country fails to host the Games successfully. (FCC)
