Topples Carolinians; Lady Jaguars beat CIT

The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters grabbed the early leadership in the high-school and college divisions of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament with twin victories Thursday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Webmasters massacred the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 92-73, to post their second straight victory in the College division in the same number of outings.

The Baby Webmasters had to go through the proverbial eye of the needle before escaping with a 68-66 victory over the Baby Warriors to tally their second straight win.

Meanwhile, the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Lady Jaguars began their campaign on a bright note after tallying a loud 80-50 victory over last year’s semifinalist, the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Lady Wildcats, in the Women’s division.

After a close 17-12 edge, the Lady Jaguars erected a 37-25 advantage after the first 20 minutes of action. Through the leadership of Dang Rabaya, the Lady Jaguars stretched their lead to 56-38 at the end of the third canto.

The Lady Wildcats employed a trapping defense in the final quarter but was all for naught as it did nothing to stop the rampaging offense of the Lady Jaguars.

Joy Mejellano and Kimberly Mahawan later combined forces in stretching the Lady Jaguars’ lead to 68-42 in the last three minutes and 55 seconds.

Labaya finished with 12 markers, while Mejellano added 11.

Meanwhile, the University of Southern Philippines Panthers will host today the Wildcats at the USP Gym, while the USP Baby Panthers will meet the CIT Wildkittens in the opening game of today’s twinbill.
