Costanilla: The dub question

DUBBING. Don’t tell me you still haven’t seen those GMA 7 sitcoms and other shows being dubbed from Tagalog to Cebuano? Through text messaging, I asked some televiewers for their opinion or comment on this matter and I’d like to share them with you now.

AC3 president Souie Mercado: “Ang mga Tagalog maoy dili makasabot sa Binisaya apan kitang mga Bisaya makasabot ug makasulti sa Tinagalog. Almost 50% of those Manila-based talents are Visayans. Let Cebuano/Visayan pride and dignity reign. Cebu is not a dumpsite of garbage from Manila.”

Choreographer Victor Cuenco: “Baduy! GMA is trying hard just to please us Cebuanos.”
* * *
Teleseries actress/singer Baby Condeno: “Dili ko uyon, infact, nakasaway gani ko. Baduy gyod kaayo paminawon. thers prefer to watch the other television network instead.“

Stage director Rajee Palanca: “Bati kaayo ang dubbing sa GMA 7 abi na ang comedy series. Bakikaw kaayo ug mini (fake) paminawon ang mga artista. We must remember that the effective delivery of punchlines and right timing are basic elements in comedy.”

Playwright/composer Allan Jayme Rabaya: “I feel awkward. I am sure GMA 7 management is also not sold out to the idea of dubbing their shows. They should scrap it (dubbing experiment) as soon as possible and instead produce teleseryes in Cebuano. I don’t know why it is only ABS-CBN that is left to hug the limelight. GMA 7 should follow suit by coming up with its own Cebuano teleseries productions.”

Radio and stage actress Esther Alferez: “Salikwaot kaayo, mora lang tag gibugal-bugalan sa mga Tagalog. They have underestimated and belittled us Cebuanos.”

Composer Jun Cavillar: “It’s like a slap on our face. Why, what do the Tagalogs think of us Cebuanos, mga bugo nga dili makasabot ug Tinagalog? If GMA 7 really wants to help promote the Cebuano entertainment scene, they should produce programs that utilize our very own local talents, dili kay lawgan ta anang ilang dubbing nga pwerteng baduya.”

Singing banker Bob Jamiro: “Kon tarong lang nga pagka-dubbing, okay lang. They can even help promote the Cebuano tongue. Maayo man sab na aron maanad na kitang mga Cebuano televiewers sa atong kaugalingong sinultihan through primetime shows.”

Stage actress/singer Jamna Gicole: “The GMA 7 strategy is downgrading the intellectual capacity of their Cebuanos televiewers and making it difficult for non-Cebuano speaking individuals to enjoy theirprograms. The network should remember that we Cebuanos can understand Tagalog. Dili na kinahanglan pa mag-dubbing sa Binisaya.”

Newswriter Joseph Tubilan: “What do the Tagalogs think of us Cebuanos? GMA 7 should think of a better strategy to win our hearts.”

Father of Sinulog David Odilao, Jr.: “Uyon ko aron daghan makasabot sa Binisaya. Mabuhi ang GMA 7!”

Masscom student April: “I really hate it. The dubbed programs make make me think we Cebuanos don’t understand Tagalog. It sucks.”

An FM deejay: “Unnecessary. Tagalog is not French, Greek, German nor Spanish. Makasabot intawon tang mga Cebuanos sa Tinagalog. GMA 7 should scrap its dubbed programs.”

Businesswoman Baby Pansoy: “As a Cebuano, it’s an honor for us nga ang mga Tagalog shows are being dubbed into our dialect. But very awkward man ang action ug facial expression sa mga artista. It’s better to hear the authentic tongue than see make-believe.”

Teleseries actress Carol Ballesteros: “Supak gyod ko. We Cebuanos understand Tagalog, why do they have to translate it for us? My kids don’t like it too. They tried watching one GMA 7 show and were all disappointed.”

MINE. There you have it, folks. Now, you want to know my own opinion? Okay, I don’t want to offend GMA 7 people, who are my friends in the first place. Their intention is laudable. After all, there is really a need to uplift the Cebuano/Visayan tongue via the television. However, I find the dubbed programs unacceptable. It would have been better had the voice talents been purely Cebuanos. But the voicing or the delivery of the speaking lines is so terrible. Scrapping the strategy (dubbing) is the best option that the network should take.
