500 Pinamungajan, Asturias kids get free books
LEAFING through colorful pages of a book is something children from Pinamungajan and Asturias towns experienced for the first time.
Some 500 children from the two towns have been chosen as beneficiaries of the Feed the Children Philippines Inc. (FTCPI), through the Department of Land Reform, in its campaign to improve learning among children.
The children were awed to receive books and notebooks from DLR officers. Delighted, they showed off their new books to their teachers.
DLR information officer Angeline Manubag said the Anapog Day Care Center in Pinamungahan and the Ginabasan Day Care Center in Asturias were privileged to be FTCPI beneficiaries.
Because of a limited budget, teachers in both areas bring their own books to school and read them before the class. To see the books’ pictures, the children gather around the teacher for a peek.
Josephine Papillero and Elizabeth Navaja, Anapog Day Care Center teachers, had to use their creativity to decorate their rooms using indigenous materials, for lack of funding.
They said the children can now learn faster with books to read at home.
FTCPI spent more than P60,000 for the project.
Aside from the books, toys were also given to both day care centers.
FTCPI also promised to conduct a feeding program in both areas.
Around 50 percent of the students in both areas are considered malnourished, prompting FTCPI to plan a feeding program there by next month.
Manubag said each center was advised to make a list of the malnourished children in their areas and to gather their parents.
Parents will be taught what food to give their children, since they play a vital role in the nutrition program’s sustainability. Studies show poor nutrition is among the causes of poor performance among schoolchildren. LLV
