Ex-Comelec lawyer heads press club’s Cebu chapter

THE National Press Club of the Philippines (NPC), Cebu Chapter elected its new officers during a meeting held recently at Eddie’s Hotel, Cebu City.

Elected were lawyer Manuel Oyson Jr., president; lawyer Eddie Barrita, executive vice president; Emmanuel delos Santos Rabacal, vice president for television; Elias Baquero, vice president for radio; Tonee Despojo, vice president for print; Godofredo Roperos, secretary; Job B. Tabada, treasurer; and Sam Costanilla, auditor.

A separate election for the members of the board of directors will be scheduled later. Still functioning as members of the board are Jerry Tundag, Anol Mongaya, Juanito Jabat, lawyer Elias Espinosa and Nelia Neri.

Other directors (who are either deceased or have retired) include Ben Ypil, Hilario Embrado, Loy Jurado, Ely Amante, Henry Redula, Johnny Bitang, Almario Bitang, Glenn Basubas, Ely Dejaresco and Jun Basadre.

NPC-Cebu is the only chapter created by the Manila-based press club by virtue of a resolution passed more than 20 years ago. Its founding president, who served the club for 20 years, was lawyer Manuel Satorre Jr.

NPC-Cebu was one of the 11 Cebu media groups that signed a memorandum of agreement creating the Cebu Council of Media Leaders (CCML), initiated and chaired by Sun.Star Cebu editor-in-chief Pachico A. Seares.

Oyson said the election is a prelude to the club’s plan to recruit members.

“This will erase the impression that NPC-Cebu is composed only of old-timers. This will be the club’s legacy to our young colleagues in the industry,” said Oyson, who is currently a sports columnist of Sun.Star Cebu. (PR)
