SpeakOut: Monuments to stupidity
By Alex Lee, LLC

SKYWALKS are purely monuments to the stupidity of our political leaders showing how they waste our tax money. The real purpose of skywalks has little to do relative to the safety of people.

The main purpose seems to be to provide space for political advertising of the politician that sponsored the skywalk. In that regard, no government project should ever bare the name of any political figure-signs should simple state: “YOUR TAX MONEY AT WORK.”

People avoid using skywalks as often as possible and they certainly can’t be used by the physically handicapped. In addition, they present a potentially serious problem to motorist as was learned in Europe and North America. That is, objects being thrown from the skywalks into oncoming traffic caused many serious to fatal accidents.

So what is the solution? I think the first step could be to totally enclose all existing skywalks with a high strength steel screen. Then, rather than build anymore skywalk “monuments,” why not install properly marked crosswalks with functioning signal lights.

In conjunction with the crosswalks, traffic enforcers and PNP personnel must not allow any type of vehicle to block a crosswalk.
