Cebu netters gain five semis berths

SO FAR, so good.

In what turned out to be a very busy day for the Cebuano netters, Jacob Lagman, Francis Largo and Kennex Abadia faced multiple opponents yesterday and carted away a total of five semifinal berths in the Prince-Nasau Junior Tennis Tournament in Davao City.

Lagman, a fifth-grader at St. Benedict’s Learning Center, claimed a semifinal seat in the 10-Under Boys division after defeating Cotabato City’s Rogelio Estanio, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals, and grabbed another one in the 12-U Boys group, where he trounced North Cotabato’s Reynaldo Dimao, 6-2, 6-0, in the quarterfinals at the Davao Capitol Tennis Club yesterday.

Largo likewise snatched two semis berths. The University of the Visayas stalwart bagged a semifinal seat in the 16-U division after posting a 6-0, 6-2 quarterfinal win over Prince Gerapusco of Polomolok, South Cotabato, and followed it up with another semis-clinching win, a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mike Abella of Cotabato City in the 18-U Boys quarters at the Ecoland 4 Tennis Courts.

Another Naga netter, Kennex Abadia, secured a semifinal ticket in the U-18 division after a thrilling, 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 victory over Juan Carlo Pantua in the quarterfinals. Abadia however failed to advance in the 16-U division after falling to a Gen. Santos player, 2-6, 2-6, in the quarters.

Lagman’s semifinal match in the 12-U Boys division against Davao City’s Andre Banate was suspended after a heavy blast of rain. The match, which is set to be continued today, had Lagman leading 6-3 after the first set. GCM
