Former world champ Feijen beats 3 Pinoy greats

NEILS Feijen lived up to his nickname as he terminated the hopes of three Pinoy legends in the Big Apple 9 Ball Challenge in New York City yesterday.

Feijen, who has earned the nickname “Terminator” for his passing resemblance to the actor who plays the role of a robotic assassin in the movie of the same name, defeated former world number-one Francisco “Django” Bustamante, 1999 World Pool Champion Efren “Bata” Reyes and icon Jose “Amang” Parica in succession to arrange a playoff against Ralf Soquet for the right to play Thomas Engert in the final.

Initial loss

After losing to Danny Basavich in the winner’s bracket, Feijen, a frequent Philippine visitor, ended Bustamante’s stay in the tournament with a 10-9 win and moved on to hand Reyes his second loss, 10-4.

Reyes earlier lost to Engert, 10-5, in the winners’ bracket before his second loss to Feijen in the double-elimination tournament.

The win against the Magician set up Feijen against Parica, who had eliminated Johnny Archer, 10-5, and Danny Hariman, 10-5, before playing Feijen.

Break

The two pool artists refused to give each other any advantage as they held on to 9-all before Feijen got his needed break in the final rack to win 10-9, with earlier tormentor Basavich next on his list for another 10-9 win.

Feijen continued his win streak against Tony Crosby, 10-7, to set up his match against Soquet, who got in the losers’ bracket after being defeated by Engert, 8-10. ML
