Lancers beat Carolinians; UV jrs. defeated
By Glenn C. Michelena

THE University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers jumpstarted their title defense of the 2005 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) crown with a dominating win on enemy territory yesterday, but their younger counterparts and fellow Cesafi defending champions went through a far more humbling episode.

A clutch inside stab by John Flanco with six seconds remaining lifted the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors to an upset 57-55 win over the UV Baby Lancers, spoiling the maiden voyage of the defending junior-division champions at the packed USC Gym yesterday.

The Green Lancers, however, avenged the heart-slicing loss, posting an 81-71 victory over the USC Warriors in the main event of the league’s Sunday tripleheader, which earlier saw the Don Bosco Technical Center Greywolves score a 65-58 victory over the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars.

In the league’s Saturday doubleheader at the University of Southern Philippines Gym, homecourt advantage proved to be a major factor as the USP collegiate and high-school squads, pepped by their fans, devoured their respective foes who wandered into their lair.

Full-court press

The Panthers, and their furious full-court press, suffocated the visiting Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildcats, 85-78, to move on top of the standings at 2-0 with University of Cebu.

The Baby Panthers pulled off a thrilling 55-53 win over the CIT Wildkittens in the high-school division.

A late-game surge enabled the Baby Warriors to score the giant-sized upset over the Baby Lancers. Trailing by four points, 51-55, after a John Cañada bucket with 2:26 left, USC stalwarts Flanco and Giovanni Padillo scored back-to-back to tie the game at 55-55 with less than a minute to go.

Another botched offensive play by UV with 24.5 seconds left allowed Kevin Arriesgado to delivering a picture-perfect assist to Flanco to win the game.

The Green Lancers, on the other hand, rode on their strong defense and a big outburst from wingman Jayford Rodriguez, who finished with 21 points, to erect a 52-38 lead over the Warriors early in the third quarter as USC played catch-up the rest of the way.

A strong effort inside the paint by USC banger Enrico Llanto combined with USC’s full-court press enabled the Warriors to stay in the game, but UV’s double-digit lead proved to be insurmountable, which was at its biggest at 71-51 midway in the fourth quarter.
