Mindanao nominees comprise majority of Triennials finalists

Eight of the top 10 finalists for both categories of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (Rafi) third Triennial Awards are from Mindanao.

The finalists for the Ramon Aboitiz Award for Exemplary Individual are Hadja Bainon G. Karon of Kabusuan, Cotabato city; Domingo D. Tadena, Toril, Davao city; Fr. Roberto L. Layson, OMI, Pikit, North Cotabato; Margarita T. Dela Cruz, Guian, Eastern Samar; and Mayor Ramon A. Piang of Upi, Maguindanao. Their areas of engagement ranged from governance, peace and development, and environment.

For the Eduardo Aboitiz Award for Outstanding Institution, the finalists are Lihok Pilipina Foundation, Inc. in Cebu city; Mahintana Foundation, Inc., Polomolok, South Cotabato; Save Mindanao Volunteers Inc., Butuan city; Maharlika Charity Foundation, Inc. and Broken-shire Integrated Health Ministries Inc., both of Davao city. These organizations are engaged in various areas, like health, gender and development, governance, environment, micro-finance, rural development, cooperative development, and education.

The search committee, chaired by Ma. Theresa Rivera, Associate Professor of Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro city, is composed of representatives from the academe, business group and civil society. Other search committee members are Myrna Lim of the Notre Dame Foundation for Charitable Activities, Inc.-Women in Enterprise Development, Eileen Mangubat of Cebu Daily News, Paul Flutty of Lexmark Philippines, and Fr. Carmelo Diola of Barug! Pilipino.
