Serna: Prayers for paisana By Roger Serna Sounds and images
Last Saturday, stars of Mga Pusang Gala, the indie film which drew crowds and created quite a stir among movie enthusiasts, especially those in the recent Pink Festival in Manila, made a brief visit to Cebu for the promotion of the movie.
This is the same film which resurrected gossips questioning the masculinity of the film’s male lead star, Ricky Davao. The film festival, by the way, exhibited films which delved on homosexuality and the things that happen in their complicated world.
This columnist caught Ricky on television one early evening laughing and shrugging the gossips away with that very familiar smile on his face.
Anyway, Mga Pusang Gala, according to Josie Pereyra of JSP Ads & Promo, will go on a regular run in Cebu moviehouses starting tomorrow, Aug. 17. The stars who confirmed their Cebu appearance, aside from Ricky, were Irma Adlawan, Lauren Novero and Ching Danseco.
A presscon was scheduled before the sneak preview of the film especially for the Cebu press. I’ll dwell on this next time. Yes, that’s a promise.

The funny and wacky news program spoof Wazzup Wazzup aired over Studio 23 became memorable for me because it was the first program whose set we visited in the unexpected Manila trip sponsored by ABS-CBN last April. From then on, I became addicted to the said program.
The set then was a typical coffee shop and we were made to appear like clients enjoying our coffee that day. Just recently, Wazzup Wazzup has transferred to a new coffee house that depicts a hipper, younger and livelier ambience.
This development came along with the program’s reformatting into a more hilarious (as if the hilarity of the old set-up was not enough) and informative way that young televiewers relate to very well.
Vhong Navarro (fresh from the box-office success of his film D’Anothers which reportedly made a killing in moviehouses nationwide), Toni Gonzaga and Archie Alemania combine their vibrant youthfulness, wit and comic flair in making the show a regular weekday attraction.

Cebu is indeed blessed with talented performers and the latest addition to stardom candidacy is Kristine Gonzaga Demeterio whose demo tape of her favorite songs, Emotion by Destiny’s Child and Weak by Sisters With Voices, got the nod of the judges of the McDonald-sponsored The Next Big Thing talent search.
That made Kristine one of the five finalists who are featured in various mini-concerts and gigs in Manila and which gave Globe GenText subscribers preferred seating in those events.
Before that unexpected twist in the Cebuana songbird’s life, Kristine was a vocalist of the popular Cebu-based group One In Him that performs regularly at Camp Z in Banilad, Mandaue City.
As to who will get the handsome prizes at stake will be known within this month. Keep your fingers crossed, folks, for the success of our paisana. Better still, include her in your prayers.

Kampanerang Kuba stars Anne Curtis and Luis Manzano gamely answered questions from the excited Cebu press in the press conference held at the Laguna Garden Café last week.
That was a day after they had a show at the southern town of Sibonga which celebrated its annual fiesta recently.
Among other things, Anne divulged that of her three leading men in the ABS-CBN fantaserye, Luis is the best kisser, Patrick Garcia is the most sweet-smelling and, as for Christian Bautista, to quote Anne: ‘okey lang.’ Whatever that means.
Luis, on the other hand, though comfortable when referred to as a metrosexual, admits that he is not vain. The pampering that he indulges is only a body massage every now and then.
Most, if not all, of those who attend the presscon agree that Luis is as articulate as his equally good-looking and witty celebrity biological father, Edu. Of course!
