Lagman and Largo triumph in Davao

Befitting a tournament that drew the crème de la crème netters of the Visayas and Mindanao tennis circuits, Davao City’s 2005 Prince-Nasau Junior Tennis Tournament produced a steady stream of spills and thrills, heartbreaking upsets
and of course – thrilling championship runs.

Jacob Lagman and Francis Largo had a lot to do with it.

Dominant

Lagman was downright dominant, snatching the 12-Under Boys crown with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Davao’s John Paolo Cansino in the division final. Lagman followed it up with another championship run in the 10-U Boys division, where he posted a thrilling 6-1, 7-6, 7-3 conquest of Cotabato City’s Rogelio Estanio in a two-hour-plus final at the Ecoland 4 Tennis Courts.

Largo, on the other hand, snared the 18-U crown by stopping the juggernaut-like rampage of Cotabato City’s Elisanto Santos, who succumbed to cramps in their 18-U Boys Finals showdown.

“I had a hard time returning his shots at first, because he’s been practicing on this court for quite some time now, and his familiarity with the ground is really a big plus,” said Largo, the gem of the University of the Visayas tennis program, after his duel with Santos. “His passing shots and down-the-liners gave me a lot of problems, but I was able to adapt to his game as the match wore on.”

Another UV entry, Kennex Abadia, failed to advance to the 18-U and 16-U Boys finals after facing Santos in the semifinal round in both divisions. Santos defeated Abadia, 6-1, 6-1, in the 16-U semifinal and made an encore performance in their rematch in the 18-U semifinal round, where Santos pulled off another win over Abadia, 6-2, 6-2. (GCM)
