Metrobank names 21st batch of top teachers

Ten distinguished teachers from different parts of the country emerged winners in this year’s Metrobank Foundation Search for Outstanding Teachers, executive vice-president and executive director Aniceto M. Sobrepeña has announced.

The names of the awardees were released after the final board of judges for the search, chaired by Senate Majority Leader Francis N. Pangilinan with Supreme Court Associate Justice Angelina Sandoval-Gutierrez as vice-chair, held a series of interviews last July.

In this 21st year of the search, the cities of Ligao and Marikina and the province of Surigao del Norte each produced their first ever winners in the search.

The awardees for the elementary level are Amelia C. Castañeda of Sto. Cristo Elementary School in Tarlac city; Vilma C. Cabrera, Ilagan South Central School, Ilagan, Isabela; Julia R. Capulong, Padre Mariano Gomez Elementary School, Sta. Cruz, Manila; and Menia S. Alvidera, President Manuel Roxas Memorial School South, Roxas city.

The awardees for the secondary level are Maylani L. Galicia, Ligao National High School, Ligao city; Dr. Diana S. Aure, University of the Philippines High School, Iloilo, Iloilo city; Janet S. Amurao, Marikina Science High School, Marikina city; and Elnora T. Ordedor, Dapa National High School, Dapa, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.

For the higher education level, the awardees are Dr. Rafael C. Bundoc, University of the Philippines-Manila; and Dr. Manuel C. Belino, De La Salle University in Manila.

The winners were chosen for their outstanding contributions to the teaching profession, personal integrity and character, instructional competence, and professional and community involvement.

They will be presented to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Malacañang on Aug. 30, where the President will confer the gold medallions. The awarding ceremonies will be held on Sept. 2 at the Metrobank Plaza Auditorium, which serves as highlight of Metrobank’s 43rd anniversary celebration. Each outstanding teacher will receive a gold medallion, trophy and a cash prize of P200,000.

The other members of the final board of judges were Rep. Rolando G. Andaya, Jr., First District of Camarines Sur; Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, Iloilo city; Ambassador Peter Beckingham, Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; Dr. Jose Maria A. Mariano, president of the University of Asia and the Pacific; Jarius Y. Bondoc, columnist and broadcaster; and Dr. Milwida M. Guevara, president of Synergeia Foundation.
