M&M’s
By Clint Fabiosa & Andrew Ong

Legend has it that while in Spain during the Spanish Civil War, Forrest Mars Sr. encountered soldiers eating pellets of chocolate encased in a hard sugary coating, which prevented melting. Inspired by these candies, he returned home and invented the M&M’s Plain Chocolate Candies recipe in his kitchen.

M&M’s candies were first sold in 1941, and soon became a favorite of the American soldiers serving in World War II.

Chocolate was being rationed during the war, however, so Mars needed a guaranteed source for his chocolate.

He teamed up with Bruce Murrie, the son of the president of Hershey. Mars put up 80 percent of the capital.

Murrie put up 20 percent of the capital and provided the source of the chocolate. Hence, “M&M’s” was placed on the chocolate candies.

Murrie sold his share to the Mars family in 1949, but the name remained.

In 1954, the M&M’s slogan, “The milk chocolate melts in your mouth—not in your hand,” made its debut, along with brand characters and M&M’s Peanut Chocolate Candies.
