San Roque footballers will have a blast from the past with the staging of the San Roque Football Club Festival this weekend with 70 teams from various age groups.

“This is part of our effort to revive football in San Roque,” said Restituto Colina Jr. during yesterday’s Scoop Forum at Baseline Restaurant.

San Roque used to be the metro’s football hotbed in the ’70s and ’80s.

The tournament is the second to be staged at the San Roque Parish field in Subangdaku, Mandaue City this year after the invitational Men’s tournament last summer.

Among the early entries are Hiroshi FC, Cebu International School, Bright Academy, Pabol, San Roque FC, Maitland Smith, Don Bosco College and Springdale.

Trophies and medals are at stake for the winners of the seven-a-side tournament.

“We pity the kids who are just playing around, so we decided to train them,” said Jesus Singson, who was among the last batch of San Roque footballers trained by University of Southern Philippines coach Eleazar Toledo.

SRFC is also trying to change the image of San Roque football.

“Before, people thought that the players from San Roque play rough or dirty. We’re trying to change that to show that it is no longer true,” said Colina.

One of San Roque football’s top products is Restituto’s cousin, Oliver, who is now training with the national team for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games and is set to play in a pre-Seag tournament in Thailand before joining a one-month training in China.
