Costanilla: Pop insinuations By Sam Costanilla Spotlight
REACTION. A reader texted me to react to the choice of the screeners (I’m one of them) of all 151 original Cebuano compositions submitted to next year’s Cebu Popular Music Festival a.k.a. Cebu Pop. We screened them the other Sunday to produce the magic 12. The texter who refused to divulge his name claimed that we didn’t fully “scrutinize” each entry. In other words, he insinuated that we didn’t listen to the entirety of the entries. He was very wrong in his claim.

AGONY. Let me stress here that in screening the Cebu Pop entries, we religiously listen to the compact disc copies submitted to the executive committee headed by Sir Phil Florita. However, there are entries whose vocals cannot be heard despite technical adjustments. So what’s the use of playing the entire entry when there is nothing substantial to hear, no lyrics to listen to? The Cebu Pop is a songwriting competition, not a minus-one contest. It’s agony on the part of the screeners to listen to nothing.

SELF-SERVING. The texter added he was so sure his entry would make it to the magic 12 because “it was such a good composition.” Well, if you don’t call that self-serving, I don’t know what is. The trouble with some players is that they also want to become the referee. If that’s their way of treating competitions, they had better not participate at all.

NO GUARANTEE. The texter also informed me that his entry was even adapted as theme song of a local teleseries production. That’s another good reason why his entry didn’t make it to the magic 12. Cebu Pop rules lay down that an entry submitted for screening should not have been played in public before. And even if his entry is a theme song a thousand times over, it is never a guarantee that his composition is pang-Cebu Pop. But he can try again next year, as other Cebu Pop entrants have done. They re-arranged their entries, did some revisions, polished some portions and submitted them as re-entries. As simple as that.

MOVIE. Irma Adlawan whose father is from Minglanilla was in town recently with Ricky Davao and Lauren Novero. In a press conference arranged by movie promotion queen Josie Pereyra, Irma struck me as a very humble and frank woman. She stressed on the need for actors and actresses to strive hard in order to stay long in the messy and intrigue-laden world of showbusiness. She cited Dolphy and Eddie Garcia whose rise to fame should be emulated by those who have opted to become stars. By the way, Irma, Ricky and Lauren are the three leading stars of Mga Pusang Gala (Stray Cats) whose opening day is on Wednesday in local theatres. Be sure to watch the film if you want to be truly delighted by the plot and their acting.

GUEST. Tomorrow, Tuesday, be sure to watch Sam Enchanted Evening over CCTN channel 47 or SkyCable 56 from 8 to 9 in the evening. The incomparable Eva Santos will be the guest. She will sing our favorite selections and allow us to peek into her private life in the interview portion. Don’t ever miss our show.
