Int’l. Year of Microcredit to be celebrated in Cebu

THE year 2005 was declared by the United Nations (UN) in 1998 as the International Year of Microcredit.

Theme is “Building inclusive financial sectors.”

In Cebu, the Cebu People’s Development Cooperative (Cepedeco) will be at the forefront in marking the event on Aug. 31.

Activities include the awarding of outstanding microfinance institutions (MFIs), a talk on microfinance by Prof. Ronald Yu and the gathering of MFI players and supporters at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel.

When the UN declared 2005 as the International Year of Microcredit, the General Assembly requested that the year’s observance be a special occasion for giving impetus to microcredit programs throughout the world.

It also asked all those involved in poverty eradication to take additional steps to make available credit and related services for self-employment and income-generating activities to an increasing number of people living in poverty.

The event is a significant acknowledgement from the international community of the important role of microcredit for overall economic development.

There are many ways to participate in the affair. Suggestions may range from providing training and capacity-building opportunities to grafting the theme onto major conferences.

Meanwhile, Cepedeco was formed to provide the credit needs of Plan International employes. For more information about the activity and Cepedeco’s services, one may call (032) 416-8244 and look for Alberto V. Bartolata or visit www.cepedeco.org.
